Menopause is a natural and inevitable phase of life, marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Often, it brings with it a variety of physical, emotional and hormonal changes. Just as the onset of menstruation was a temporary transition into womanhood, menopause is a temporary transition into a new stage of life. Menopause offers an opportunity for growth, reflection, and embracing a new phase of life. While every woman will experience menopause differently, it is a normal process that deserves understanding and support.

 

A turbulent time for many

For many women, navigating this journey can feel overwhelming, especially when symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and fatigue become prominent – although there are many other symptoms. When ovulation ceases, the ovaries stop releasing eggs and produce significantly less estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle and maintain various bodily functions. This hormonal decline affects the body in several ways. Bone density decreases, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Cardiovascular health is affected by changes in cholesterol levels. Body temperature regulation is affected, which leads to hot flushes and night sweats. Vaginal and urinary changes often occur, leading to discomfort during sex. And incontinence, mood and cognition regularly fluctuate, and we know how that gets us into all sorts of trouble at home and work.

One treatment does not suit all

Menopause is a deeply personal transition, and no single treatment suits all women. While these changes are natural, their intensity, duration and the associated health risks vary widely among women due to their personal circumstances. The hormonal, emotional, and physical changes experienced during menopause differ significantly, making individualised care essential.

With such a diverse range of symptoms, some women seem to experience them all, whilst others experience very few. One person may experience intense hot flushes and night sweats whilst another faces mood swings. Some experience insomnia, others joint pain. Even with minimal symptoms, women may need support for long-term bone or cardiovascular health. Whatever the symptom, I’ll tailor a plan to address the most pressing issue.

It is important for me to factor in your health history and any pre-existing conditions. Your lifestyle plays a significant role in determining what treatment is suitable. Whilst hormone

replacement therapy (HRT) may be effective for managing symptoms like hot flushes it might not be recommended for women with a history of certain cancers, blood clotting disorders, liver or cardiovascular disease. Likewise, herbal remedies might interact with medications or exacerbate conditions like hypertension.

HRT may not be able to address all menopause-related symptoms. Mood swings due to hormonal fluctuation may be managed, but anxiety, depression or stress cannot be handled directly with HRT. Night sweats may be alleviated; however, the underlying cause of insomnia isn’t. When musculoskeletal discomfort stems from factors like lifestyle or autoimmune conditions, HRT cannot help. Libido can be partially restored, but there are many factors influencing sexual desire and satisfaction, and HRT can resolve only the hormonal aspect. And finally, the big one – weight gain. HRT does not directly affect weight management. Diet, exercise and metabolism play a much larger role in menopausal weight gain than hormones do.

Understanding these effects can empower women to manage the menopausal transition more effectively.
